The Ten Commandments are a measuring tool to see how “good” of a person we are.
Look at a few examples to see how you measure up.
Do not steal. Have you ever stolen anything? It may have been just a paperclip or pencil that wasn’t yours.
Do not bear false-witness against you neighbor or do not lie to you neighbor. Have you ever lied to a friend or a stranger?
Do not covet. Have you ever wanted what your neighbors possess?
If you have answered yes to any of these questions, then you have broken God’s law. When you break His law it is called sin. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “All have sinned, all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” According to God’s word everyone has sinned. I John 1:8 says, “If we say we have no sin, we are just fooling ourselves and refusing to accept the truth.” So by these few statements, you may realize that you have sinned. If you realize that you have sinned, then you are admitting that you are a sinner. The Bible says, “The wages of sin is death.” This death that the Bible speaks of is a spiritual death, total separation from God in a place called Hell. If you believe in Heaven then you must believe in Hell.
You may be thinking that there is no hope according to what you have just read. However, there is hope. Hope in Jesus Christ! This same Bible that says all of these things, also tells us the way to avoid Hell and live forever with God in Heaven. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” God made a way for us to avoid the penalty of sin by sending His son, Jesus, into the world to take on the responsibility and our punishment for our sin. This is God’s gift to man.
You may be thinking, “How can I get this gift?” First, you must admit that you are a sinner. Second, the Bible says, “Believe that Jesus came and lived a sinless life, died for you, and was raised from the dead.” If you believe these things and are willing to surrender your life to Him, then pray the following prayer:
Heavenly Father, I have sinned against you. I want forgiveness for all of my sins. I believe that Jesus died on the cross for me. I believe that he rose again. Father, I give you my life to do with as you wish. I want Jesus Christ to come into my life and into my heart. I ask this all in Jesus’ name. Amen.
If you prayed this prayer and believed, then welcome to the kingdom of God. Now, what’s next? Find a local church and be baptized there. We would love to have you at our church!
