With a heart for God and a vision of the future, eight dedicated people joined together to form the union of East Brow Baptist Church. With finances provided for by other sister churches and the Alabama Baptist Convention and the Board of Missions, they began meeting in a mobile chapel.
Brother Dean Johnson acted as the Mission Interim Pastor. Charter members were Teresa Johnson, Sybil Presley, Jesse & Pat House, Phillip & Brenda Rogers, and Clyde Howse.
Brother George Hughes became the first pastor on Feb 1, 1984. On June 2, 1985 the church was constituted as a Southern Baptist Church. The groundbreaking for a more permanent building also took place on this day and the new building was dedicated on June 7, 1987.
Brother David Starling came to East Brow as a bi-vocational pastor on January 19, 1992. The church continued to grow. East Brow had a heart for missions and over the next eight years went on several mission trips to Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Brother Kevin Wilks was called as the next bi-vocational pastor in October 1999. The members began to realize that they had outgrown their church building and began to pray for God’s leadership. Once again God provided what was needed. The church was able to purchase a 72 acre farm located at 3434 Alabama Highway 75, Flat Rock, Alabama. A ground breaking service was held with a manual turning plow and every member participated in the new beginning. The new building was completed and the dedication was held on March 24, 2002. They also began a new mission by opening the Community Mission Center, which provides food for the under privileged in the community.
The church has also found a need for more ministers. They have elected three more men of God to lead our church. Dr. Charles Smith and Brother Scott Crye were both elected to serve as pastors, and Brother Christin Anderson was elected to serve as our children’s leader.
The church is continually growing. They have finished a building project behind the church that includes an outdoor pavilion, baseball field, playground, volley ball & basketball courts, and a walking track. The fellowship hall was also expanded and 4 more class rooms were added upstairs.
The Lord has truly blessed here at East Brow over the past 35 years. May the church continue to pursue the things of God and faithfully serve Him as we patiently await His expected return.
